Student Led Conferences Important Part of Learning

On April 16 and 17, Waterville students in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade participated in student led conferences. This format for conferences encourages students to gather, analyze, understand and explain their learning goals and growth, and is a critical piece of their overall learning. We believe that during the process of tracking their academic data, setting academic and personal goals, and taking time to reflect on their progress, students learn about themselves as students and productive members of our learnng community. Waterville staff work very hard throughout the year to support students in this process, and we see a direct correlation between students who have the opportunity to share their achievement data and students who are excited about their learning and see themselves as learners.

Thank you to those families who attended Waterville Elementary's Student Led Conferences this spring! Your participation is the most critical piece to the success of our conferences and to our students!

Students Follow "The 7 Habits" As They Return to School

Elementary students were all smiles on Wednesday morning, August 31 when they arrived at school for the new year! They were greeted by colorful designs and positive messages drawn on the sidewalk in chalk by PTO members. "7 Habits" sayings like "Be Proactive" and "Synergize" were mixed in with flowers, suns, and smiley faces! As students and parents entered the elementary building, they were "wowed" by the newly painted mural covering the entire wall inside the entrance. This work of art was designed and painted by Waterville's own Kimberly Gormley (mom of McKaylin (8th grade) and Gannon (4th grade). On the mural is the "7 Habits Tree", adorable students, and a Waterville school bus.

As students headed down the hallway to their classrooms, they noticed that each hallway was identified by green and white street signs. The main hall that goes from the front door, past the office and down the hallway to Mrs. Deishl's room is "Proactive Parkway". As you head down "Proactive Parkway" and turn right past the library, you are on "Win-Win Way". All of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids" have been used to name hallways in the elementary. As studens go through the Commons and out to recess, they travel along "Sharpen The Saw Street" and go past "Seek First to Understand, then Be Understood Boulevard".

The "7 Habits" are taught and modeled in every classroom and throughout every aspect of elementary student life. Teachers and administrators believe that by integrating these habits into curriculum, student government and activities, students will learn tools that will help them reach their personal and academic potential. Teachers will soon begin an after school Book Club reading Steven Covey's book "The Leader In Me". Parents are invited to join - call Mrs. Nelson for more information.
